SEASONAL LABORER (DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS)

General Description:

This is a temporary part-time seasonal position which under close supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of township roads, storm sewers and at other public work facilities.  Performs other related duties as required.

NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To:

  • Operates a variety of gasoline powered machinery including but not limited to water pumps, air compressors, pneumatic tools, drills, and chain saws; 
  • Use a variety of hand tools and implements to perform manual labor;  
  • May operate and maintain asphalt heating kettle;
  • Loads debris into truck for removal;
  • Perform minor maintenance of vehicles and equipment;  
  • Operate snow blowers and shovel township walkways;  
  • Remove litter from Township properties or roadside;
  • May frequently work in adverse weather conditions;
  • May be required to work overtime as required and be subject to call in for emergencies;  
  • May occasionally be required to drive Class B vehicles (if licensed to do so);
  • Performs duties so assigned by the Superintendent or Public Works Supervisor. 

Qualifications:

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and supplies used to perform varied types of manual and unskilled tasks;
  • Ability to perform manual tasks either alone or as a member of a group;
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods of time under varying temperatures and climatic conditions;
  • Ability to follow safety precautions in the operation of assigned tools and equipment;
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, be self-motivated and able to function efficiently within a fast paced and sometimes stressful environment;
  • Ability to work in a team-orientated environment with the ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships;
  • Ability to deal effectively and patiently with the general public, other Township employees, including management and municipal officials in a pleasant, tactful, professional and efficient manner;
  • Ability to read, write, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.   

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

  • Applicants must possess a valid NJ Driver’s license. Possession of a valid minimum Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred but not required for seasonal position. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Physical conditions adequate to perform required tasks, including ability to lift loads of greater than 50 lbs.;
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.

Successful candidate must be eighteen (18) years of age or older and reside in New Jersey unless otherwise exempted by law. Will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical, background / reference check and motor vehicle record check.

Wages: 

$16.15 per hour (2nd year returning receive $1 increase, subsequent years receive standard % increase.)
