Per Diem Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

General Description:

Under the direction of the EMS Director or his/her designee, work involves a variety of responsibilities to include but are not limited to patient care, driving various emergency vehicles, vehicle maintenance checks and equipment checks, completion of various forms, excellent interpersonal skills and ability to remain calm in an emergency situation. Performs other related duties as required.

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To:

  • Administer emergency first aid;
  • Required to function under changing, confusing and stressful situations;
  • Check all equipment to insure operational status and make proper notification

for repair as needed;

  • Perform housekeeping duties as assigned to station;
  • Maintain current certification as required by Township of Monroe and

New Jersey State Department of Health Services;

  • Required to work rotating or steady shifts and adapt to irregular working

Conditions;

  • Maintain mental alertness and readiness to act at all times;
  • Understand and follow orders, policies and procedures;
  • Accept direction and functions cooperatively as one member of a unit;
  • Communicate effectively and coherently over the telephone and radio;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to remain calm in stressful / emergency situations;
  • Must be able to work various shifts including but not limited to days, nights, weekends and holidays. While schedule is as needed, must be able to submit a minimum of thirty-six (36) hours of availability each month, including one 12-hour weekend shift, and availability for one spring/summer major holiday (Memorial Day or 4th of July) and one winter major holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve/Day);
  • Ability to follow safety precautions in the operation of assigned tools and equipment including in the operation of a large vehicle;
  • Ability to adhere to prescribed rules and regulations and other prescribed routines and practices;
  • Ability to function under pressure;
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, be self-motivated, critical thinker, organized, detail-oriented and able to function efficiently within a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment;
  • Ability to deal effectively and patiently with the general public, co-workers including management and municipal officials in a pleasant, tactful, professional and efficient manner;
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment with the ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships;
  • Ability to read, write, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Must be physically capable of transferring a patient on and off a stretcher and moving weight of patient and stretcher. Weights of patients may vary;
  • Must be physically capable of treating patients with various medical equipment that may require bending, lifting, pushing, pulling and crawling;
  • Ability to ascend or descend stairs;
  • Ability to drag objects or persons.

LICENSE, EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • Must be certified EMT at least two (2) years preferred;
  • Graduation from High School, Vocational School or equivalent;
  • Must possess a valid NJ Driver’s License in good standing.

Successful candidate must be eighteen (18) years of age or older and reside in New Jersey unless otherwise exempted by law and is required to pass a written test, screening by an oral board, pre-employment physical, drug screen, background / reference check and motor vehicle record check.

Wages:

$28.64 per hour (Rate increases by $1.00 after completing 650 hours within that working year, along with annual increases each year thereafter in accordance with Collective Bargaining Agreement.
