MECHANIC (Full-Time)

General Description:

Under direction performs varied mechanical work involved in the repair, maintenance and servicing of diesel engines, motor vehicles, and/or construction equipment working with various machines and hand tools common to the trade. Performs other related duties as required. Reports to the Senior Mechanic.

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To:

· Operates light, medium and heavy-duty trucks with automatic and manual transmission;

· Analysis, diagnosis and repairs all Township vehicles and heavy equipment;

· Diesel repair and maintenance;

· Uses a variety of tools including, but not limited to, diagnostic scan equipment, multi-meters, HVAC equipment, brake lathe, light and heavy-duty brake / tire machine and balancer;

· Maintain records of work performed and access various fleet maintenance and management systems;

· May be assigned to operate snow plows and sanders;

· May be required to work in adverse weather conditions and make on the road repairs;

· Involves frequent lifting of 50 lbs. or more;

· Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

· Must be equipped with own hand tools to perform various duties, as set forth in job specifications;

· Knowledge of the methods, materials and supplies used to perform varied types of manual and skilled tasks;

· Knowledge in automotive wiring and wiring diagrams;

· Knowledge and ability to utilize the following: diagnostic scan equipment, multi-meters, HVAC equipment, brake lathe, light and heavy-duty brake machine;

· Proficient in computers;

· Proficient in diesel repair and maintenance;

· Ability to perform manual tasks either alone or as a member of a group;

· Ability to follow safety precautions in the operation of assigned tools and equipment;

· Ability to work in a team-orientated environment with the ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships;

· Ability to deal effectively and patiently with the general public, other Township employees, including management and municipal officials in a pleasant, tactful, professional and efficient manner;

· Ability to read, write, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

· Physical conditions adequate to perform required tasks, including ability to lift loads of greater than 50 lbs;

· Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods of time under varying temperatures and climatic conditions;

· Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.

LICENSE / CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

· Must possess valid NJ Driver’s License with a minimum CDL - Class B License. (Must obtain “P” endorsement (with or without “R” restriction) within six months and a Class A within one year);

· Certified automotive mechanic preferred;

· Must be certified on all brake systems or obtain certification within one year;

· Minimum five (5) years of experience as a vehicle and equipment mechanic;

· Welding experience preferred.

Successful candidate must be eighteen (18) years of age or older and reside in New Jersey unless otherwise exempted by law. Will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical, background / reference check and motor vehicle record check, including DOT D&A Clearinghouse.

Wages:

$70,873.00 / Pursuant to applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
