Monroe Township Utility and Engineering Staff Convene with State, Federal Authorities and BFI Landfill Representatives to Investigate “Chemical Odor” from BFI Landfill
Mayor Tamburro Insists “Immediate Action Is Necessary"
MONROE TOWNSHIP, N.J. – September 24, 2020 – Monroe Township utility and engineering staff met yesterday afternoon with authorities from the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and representatives from BFI/Republic Services to investigate a chemical odor emanating from the closed, BFI Superfund landfill located near a residential neighborhood.
Mayor Tamburro expressed strong concern and demanded immediate action for the impacted residents in Inwood Estates, comprising parts of Lori, Michelle and Lani streets.
“The current situation is unacceptable and requires immediate action by the responsible party (BFI/Republic Services) with oversight from state and federal authorities,” Tamburro said. “Township professionals are in daily contact with the responsible parties to ensure they identify the cause of the odorous chemical vapors and rectify it as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
The investigation at the landfill site continues on a daily basis. The Township has demanded constant communication with the EPA, DEP and BFI/Republic, including a public meeting that will be scheduled in the next several days and held in the near future.
