MTUD LABORER (Full-Time) | DEPARTMENT OF UTILITIES

General Description:

Entry level position is responsible for all general work requirements associated with the service and maintenance of a wide variety of tasks in support of the water and sewer collection and distribution systems including to perform any and all miscellaneous functions in support of the buildings, grounds, motorized fleet and equipment maintenance as necessary. Performs other related duties as required.

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To:

  • Repairs of water & sewer mains.
  • Installation and repairs of water & sewer service to residents.
  • Repair and replace fire hydrants.
  • Perform routine maintenance on motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Operate construction power & hand tools, non-powered hand tools, Kubota, backhoe, portable VAC system trailer, valve exerciser, etc.
  • Operate general construction equipment.
  • Install protection boxes for water & sewer system.
  • Flush fire hydrants.
  • Filling out daily work orders.
  • Wash down detention tanks and grit chambers.
  • Perform & assist in routine maintenance and operation of the water & sewer system.
  • Handle numerous general labor functions i.e. housekeeping, yard maintenance, inventory control, painting, cleaning, etc.
  • Snow Plowing for Township, when called or as assigned.
  • Performs other routine and on-call duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Skilled use of heavy equipment such as dump trucks, utility trucks and occasional use of backhoe as well as power & non-powered construction type hand tools.
  • Basic computer skills i.e. Excel, MS Suite and Outlook.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods of time under varying temperatures and climatic conditions.
  • Ability to follow safety precautions in the operation of assigned tools and equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, be self-motivated, detail-oriented and able to function efficiently within a fast paced and sometimes stressful environment;
  • Ability to deal effectively and patiently with the general public, other Township employees including management and municipal officials in a pleasant, tactful, professional and efficient manner;
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment with the ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships;
  • Ability to read, write, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Physical conditions adequate to perform required tasks, including ability to lift loads of greater than 50 lbs.
  • Withstand to frequently work in adverse weather conditions.

LICENSE, EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • Applicants must possess a valid NJ Driver’s license. (CDL Class A is preferred but candidate will be required to obtain Class B CDL within 6 months of hire and a CDL Class A with N Endorsement within 3 years of hire (or to advance to Senior Laborer*) if candidate does not have a CDL at time of hire.)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Trade school/skills preferred.

*Advancement to Senior Laborer is subject to skills testing, job knowledge, certifications held and must have a minimum of 3 years in this title.

Successful candidate must be eighteen (18) years of age or older and reside in New Jersey unless otherwise exempted by law. Will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical, background / reference check and motor vehicle record check, including DOT D&A Clearinghouse for CDL holders.

Wages:

$51,627.00 / Pursuant to applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
