Honoring Our Heroes: Monroe Township’s Tribute to Veterans
As Mayor of Monroe Township, it is both an honor and a privilege to stand alongside our esteemed veterans, recognizing their unwavering dedication and sacrifice as we celebrated Military Appreciation Month in May. Our community’s commitment to honoring our heroes is steadfast, as evidenced by the recent events that have brought us together in gratitude and remembrance.
On April 30, Monroe Township veterans and their guests gathered at the Stonebridge Ballroom for a poignant Mayor’s Veteran Movie where we watched ‘The Last Full Measure’ and reflected on the bravery and selflessness displayed by those who have served. It was a touching evening filled with camaraderie and respect, setting the tone for Military Appreciation Month in May 2024. That evening, I also had the privilege of issuing a proclamation to honor our nation’s heroes, expressing our deepest gratitude for their service and sacrifice.
Continuing our tribute to veterans, on May 9, I had the honor of joining Concordia Veterans and their families at the Concordia Clubhouse for a formal recognition ceremony. The New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs presented medals to these deserving individuals, acknowledging their valor and commitment to duty. It was a humbling experience to stand alongside these brave men and women, whose sacrifices have contributed immeasurably to our community and our nation.
As Armed Forces Day approached, Monroe Township High School hosted its annual Armed Forces Appreciation Day on May 23. Hundreds of individuals, including school and township officials, gathered on the football field to pay tribute to those who have served, both past and present. It was a day filled with solemn reflection, as we honored the courage and sacrifice of our servicemen and women, pledging never to forget their contributions to our freedom.
Finally, on Memorial Day, we gathered at Veterans Park on Avenue K for a Remembrance Ceremony to honor the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. It was a solemn occasion, marked by reverence and gratitude as we paid tribute to the brave souls who gave their lives to defend the ideals we hold dear.
In addition to these community events, I am proud to share the remarkable story of Monroe resident Seymour Nussenbaum, who was honored with a prestigious Congressional Gold Medal on March 21. Seymour, along with his fellow veterans of the World War II Ghost Army, played a crucial role in saving thousands of American lives through their ingenuity and courage. Their innovative tactics and unwavering dedication exemplify the very best of the American spirit, and it is fitting that they are finally receiving the recognition they deserve.
As we reflect on these events and honor the service of our veterans, let us reaffirm our commitment to supporting and uplifting those who have sacrifices so much for our nation. Together, let us ensure that their legacy of courage, sacrifice and service will never be forgotten.
