Gov. Phil Murphy and Monroe Mayor Stephen Dalina Tour Flooded Neighborhood in Rossmoor Following Remnants of Tropical Storm Henri
Murphy to Seek Federal Emergency Assistance to Assist in Repairs
MONROE – August 23, 2021 – Following a deluge of nine inches of rain from Sunday through this morning, more than 100 households in Monroe sustained extensive flood damage, with 96 of them located within the Rossmoor adult living community.
In response, Monroe Mayor Stephen Dalina and Gov. Phil Murphy toured the site this morning and met with the victims of the remnants of Tropical Storm Henri. The governor arrived by 10 a.m., telling residents that he will declare a State of Emergency and seek state and federal funding to help.
The governor observed that strong floodwaters had climbed more than a foot on closed garage doors and in some homes rose even higher. In front of one house, the tail of a blue Volkswagen sedan had been pushed 90 degrees and was partially sitting on the homeowner’s front lawn.
“Governor Murphy needed to understand that this flooding has occurred before and that these residents – many of whom are senior citizens on a fixed income – need help,” Mayor Dalina said. “That is why I hosted him to assess the damage first-hand. I appreciate that the governor agrees this is a difficult circumstance and that he has pledged to do all he can to help flooding victims.”
Murphy and Dalina drove through the Rossmoor neighborhood, including Newport Way and Oxford Lane, where they saw stranded cars and homes that had been flooded. As this neighborhood remained without power earlier today, residents could only hope to quickly begin the recovery process.
Affected residents are encouraged to provide their contact information with the township’s Office of Emergency Management at
Murphy and Dalina thanked all first responders for their quick and compassionate response.
